A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including extensive tooth decay and impactions (problematic wisdom teeth).
At Dr. Gowd’s Dental Hospitals we offer comfortable and painless extractions. We offer local anesthesia and comfortable setting to ensure the extraction goes off smoothly and with minmal discomfort.
Types of Extractions
We perform both simple and surgical extractions.
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth, usually under local anesthesia and require only the use of instruments to elevate and/or grasp the visible portion of the tooth. Typically, the tooth is lifted using an elevator and a dental forceps which help in making the tooth loose in its socket and then subsequent removal.
Surgical extraction or removal of impacted tooth
Surgical extraction or removal of impacted tooth involves removal of a tooth that cannot be easily accessed, usually because they are badly broken, incompletely erupted or impacted. The surrounding bone is then removed with a drill so as to facilitate tooth removal. Removal of wisdom tooth usually falls under this category. We prescribe antibiotics pre- and post-operatively if we determine there is a risk of infection.
