A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including extensive tooth decay and impactions (problematic wisdom teeth).
At Dr. Gowd’s Dental Hospitals we offer comfortable and painless extractions. We offer local anesthesia and comfortable setting to ensure the extraction goes off smoothly and with minmal discomfort.
Types of Dental Extractions
We perform both simple and surgical extractions.
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth, usually under local anesthesia and require only the use of instruments to elevate and/or grasp the visible portion of the tooth. Typically, the tooth is lifted using an elevator and a dental forceps which help in making the tooth loose in its socket and then subsequent removal.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth also called third molars, are the last permanent teeth that erupt usually between the ages of 16 and 23. These are four adult teeth that erupt at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. Some people may never develop wisdom teeth and for others, wisdom teeth erupt normally like any other molar teeth without causing any problems.
However, many people develop impacted wisdom teeth because of lack of room to erupt normally in the oral cavity. These are impacted and sometimes may not erupt at all. At times, they erupt partially or in an abnormal position ie. differently angulated.
In such cases, it is difficult to clean that last tooth which can lead to caries, gum problems, infection and pain. The pain from the third molars can radiate from the gum to the ear. This calls for surgical extraction of the wisdom teeth, which is best done by experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons.Even if the wisdom teeth are asymptomatic, it can still harbor disease. It’s difficult to predict future problems with impacted wisdom teeth. Therefore surgeons advise extraction of wisdom teeth to eliminate future problems, in the older adults.
Wisdom teeth extraction is usually done under local anesthesia, or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the problem. After the extraction is done a gauze is placed over the extraction site to control bleeding and to help a blood clot form.
At Dr.Gowds, your safety and comfort are top priority. Post-surgery, the surgeon will advise a few instructions to be followed to manage bleeding, pain, swelling and bruising, activity, beverages, food, cleaning your mouth, etc. If you have a wisdom tooth problem, don’t put it away, visit your oral and maxillofacial surgeon for treatment and advise.
